Program Description:

DAY ONE: EMDR Therapy with OCD, Panic Disorder and Phobias

This one-day workshop will address the application of EMDR therapy with clinical populations suffering from OCD, Panic Disorder and Phobia.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a bio-psycho-socio-cultural disorder that includes genetic, neural brain anomalies, traumatic experiences, and development of dysfunctional beliefs learnt from others and from the environment. The current empirical research supports the utilisation of a specific form of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (Exposure and Response Prevention) however not all clients respond well to this intervention.

This workshop will explore the utilisation of EMDR therapy as a possible treatment for OCD, Panic Disorder and Phobias. It will highlight three important aspects: firstly, that the theoretical framework of EMDR therapy (Adaptive Information Processing) can play a part (albeit partly) in explicating some of the symptoms encountered by individuals with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Panic and Phobias. Secondly, that EMDR therapy can be a useful adjunctive, rather than distinct, psychological treatment intervention for individuals with OCD, Panic and Phobias. Thirdly, that the treatment impact of EMDR Therapy appears to be greater if there is distinct evidence of past traumatological experiences that are sufficient to generate a presently held level of disturbance.

DAY TWO: Treating Sexual Abuse Perpetrated by Clergy, Professionals and Those in Fiduciary Roles

Sexual abuse perpetrated by those in fiduciary roles (professionals entrusted with guiding and caretaking roles) breach these legal and ethical relationships of trust. This workshop will feature treatment for clergy abuse, while also considering the prevalence, impact and treatment needs related to abuse by teachers, coaches, health providers, therapists, employers and others. Distinctive forms of sexual traumatology generate unique trauma characteristics not accounted for by existing PTSD classifications (DSM-5/ ICD-11). Such a breach of a fiduciary relationship has significant implications often generating persistent symptoms in areas of safety, trust, secrecy, shame, alienation and moral injury. Trauma informed psychological treatment is critical.

This workshop will depict treatment for survivors of such traumas which is viewed through the lens of the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, and explores six considerations:
    • Psychoeducation
      Trauma Stabilization
      Trauma Confrontation
      Intensive Trauma Treatment
      EMDR Group Interventions
      Post-Traumatic Growth and Resilience
Broader aspects related to sexual abuse by clergy considers church hierarchy, celibacy and litigation processes and other additional factors. In summary – this workshop will consider the application of EMDR Therapy with survivors of fiduciary trauma.

Day 1 Learning Objectives - Participants will be able to:
    • Describe core components of the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) and how this applies to OCD, Panic Disorder and Phobia clinical populations
Describe other theoretical frameworks integrated alongside EMDR therapy with OCD, Panic Disorder and Phobia clients
Describe strategies for working with these clinical issues
Formulate treatment approaches integrating workshop knowledge
Employ topic-related strategic target selection for EMDR reprocessing
Reference theoretical, empirical and clinical case examples illuminating topic-related knowledge, understanding and application
Day 2 Learning Objectives - Participants will be able to:
    • Describe core components of the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) and how this applies to survivors of fiduciary trauma
Describe prevalent symptoms for survivors of fiduciary trauma
Describe various theoretical frameworks to explicate these forms of sexual traumatology
Describe methods in the application of EMDR therapy with this important client group
Employ topic-related strategic target selection and interweave considerations for EMDR reprocessing
Reference theoretical, empirical and clinical case examples illuminating topic-related knowledge, understanding and application
