Mark Nickerson is a psychotherapist who has practiced in the Amherst, MA region for 30 years, with an expertise in trauma treatment. He is an EMDR Institute Trainer and EMDRIA Approved EMDR Consultant. He has served on the EMDR International Association Board for seven years and was Board President in 2014. He is the Director of EMDR Advanced Training and Distance Learning, LLC. (

He speaks, consults and conducts a range of advanced trauma-informed trainings nationally and internationally on topics including treatment for problem behaviors, conflict resolution, problematic anger and violence, cultural competence and treating culturally based trauma, and the effective use of EMDR protocols. He has developed award-winning innovative programs designed to reduce and resolve interpersonal conflict and is the originator of the Cycle Model as an approach to assessing and treating problem behaviors. He is editor/author of Cultural Competence and Healing Culturally-Based Trauma with EMDR Therapy: Insights, Strategies and Protocols (Springer, 2016) and The Wounds Within (Skyhorse, 2015), an expose on the challenges for war veterans and their families.

Within the local community, Nickerson co-founded the Men’s Resource Center of Western MA in 1985, a unique organization that offered a variety of services including state-certified domestic violence intervention groups. He is the Director of Parent Education for the Hampshire County Court’s Bar Association, & for 20 years has designed & facilitated innovative and award-winning programs to reduce conflict between separated parents, including a skills-based co-parenting class for separated parents.
